About The Country Club

The Country Club exists to divert its members by recording and comparing members’ travels. There are 195 UN Member States/Official Observor, and we are trying to visit them all. Check our progress on the Club Ladder, to the right, or by clicking the link for the List of Countries Visited below that. Curious how we count? Click The Country Club By-Laws link.

Mr Greeley: A nice guy in Dubai

Quite controversial.  Of course I've been to so called Palestine many many times but not since the UN provided this unwarranted status.

But suffice it to say I can now proudly add another country to my list - United Arab Emirates.  And here is my poem followed by photos to provide documentation

What's a nice Jewish guy
doing in Dubai
To get to ninety six
and get back into the mix

PS I searched far and wide for microbreweries or local wine estates in the UAE to no avail, so I settled for an imported Australian Shiraz

PPS: Yr sec'y just remembered a January 2016 visit to Norway.

Denominator Increases to 195 Countries

Dear Members,

The Club's denominator increased, it turns out, on 29 November 2012, when Palestine became a permanent non-member observer state.  Founding members will recall, in debates surrounding the Club's by-laws in the late Spring of 2002, that the Holy See, the sole permanent non-member observer state, was included in our Club denominator per by-law Article 2, settling our original denominator at 192 Countries.  In September and October of that year, Switzerland and Timor-Leste became permanent member states, bringing the total to 194, where it has stood until now.  The Country Club's denominator is now set at 195 countries.

Members who have visited Palestine as of 29 November 2012 should announce a visit to the Secretary in due course.  The List of Countries Visited has been revised to include this change.

An excerpt from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_General_Assembly_observers

"There are two permanent non-member observer states at the United Nations: the Holy See and Palestine. The Holy See uncontroversially obtained its non-member observer state status in 1964 and Palestine was so designated in 2012, following an application for full membership in 2011 which failed to secure Security Council approval. Both are described as "Non-member States having received a standing invitation to participate as observers in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly and maintaining permanent observer missions at Headquarters". The Holy See's status as a non-member state permanent observer in the United Nations has been questioned, as not having the attributes of a state.
The change of Palestinian observer status in 2012 from "non-member observer entity" to "non-member observer state" was regarded as an "upgrade" of their status. Many called the change "symbolic" but which was regarded as providing new leverage to the Palestinians in their dealings with Israel. As a result, in the change in status, the United Nations Secretariat recognized Palestine's right to become a party to treaties for which the UN Secretary-General is the depositary.
The seating in the General Assembly Hall is arranged with non-member observer states being seated immediately after UN member states, and before other observers. On 10 September 2015, the General Assembly resolved to approve the raising at the UN of the flags of non-member observer states alongside those of the 193 UN member states."

Mr K's Cold Beer and Yr Sec'y's Second Thought

Mr. Secretary,

Since we are doing burst of updating, I also have one more country to add to my total.

In May 2015 I passed through Andorra. We filled our tank with cheap tax free gasoline and I downed a beer despite the fact it was bloody cold even in May. Andorra does not have a domestic beer (or anything else that I could see) so I had a Heineken. Unfortunately, I do not have photos, but I can try and dig out my credit card receipt for the gas.

Yours sincerely,

Robert (Bob)

PS.  Mr Karam now has 66 countries, and moves ahead of Ms de Walden into 13th place.

PPS.  Yr Sec'y has, on second thought, a new country, namely Indonesia, where he conferenced in a family planning way with none other than Messrs Brady and Karam last January.  My shoulders are now rubbing those of our dear Governor and Honorary Past President, Mr Hovig, at 103 countries.

Mr Earle eats serious prawns

Mr. Secretary,
After several years of repeat visits to far flung places like Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Ethiopia, South Africa and Kenya,
per attached evidence, I am pleased to report a first visit to Sri Lanka where Lion Lager, red wine, Talisker and some serious prawns - more like lobsters - were consumed ...
Alas, a 27th country to the subset of Golfing Country Visits was prevented by torrential rain, and so I remain on 26, still leading Mr. Chapman by 8 and where are the rest of you ....? Criteria are simple - did you play there or not (and have a beverage of appropriate type afterwards)! Spreadsheet attached for your consideration.
Cheers,
Mr. Earle ... they call me Speedoo but my real name is ...

Mr Negus carries no fish

Mr Secretary

I have just spent two lovely weeks in Dhaka, and it was a good thing that I brought in those bottles of wine in my checked bags- they were essential to survival.  Attached is a photo taken on the way out at security.  Fortunately I had no machine guns or fish in my carry-on bags...

Mr Clancy continues to gloat

Sec'y's note:  Mr G emailed the note below to the club some months ago.  He is also currently in Namibia, his 95th country.  Unfortunately, as also reported today, Mr Clancy has revised his total to 97 countries, and Mr G remains in 5th place.

Mr Secretary

I am afraid that Mr. Clancy can gloat no longer. After a decade of virtual stagnation, I am pleased to report the addition of 3 new countries.  The first, in Mozambique, occurred in August of 2015. I had sent the information to the Club Secretary shortly thereafter, along with the requisite photo, but unfortunately, Mr. Chapman neglected to post the event due most certainly to his preoccupation these days with all things M&E. I am attaching a picture to prove that not only did I enjoy a beer at the famed Maputo Navy Club but also I did so in the company of one of the locals.  I also send a second photo taken from Mozambique with what appears to be a local beer but in fact is a clever wooden carven replica.

I have just returned from a trip to 2 new countries that I have not previously visited, and have attached pictures as proof.  As such, if I am correct, this should bring my country total to 94. I am holding on to fourth place for dear life (after Mr.Vanderzwaan, Hovig and Chapman in that order) with, unfortunately, few prospects to gain more countries soon unless either I retire or change jobs again with an organization that works in countries I have not yet visited (my main criteria for taking on a new job).

As for my recent trip, the first country I visited was Ukraine. The attached picture shows that I am deciding between drinking the local beer or a tasty fruit flavored vodka. I chose the latter in the end. In any case, I was toasting to the recent advances made by Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine.

The second trip was to Kazakhstan, which, as members of this club you would know, is the largest landlocked country in the world, is where apples first originated, and which recently bid unsuccessfully to host the Winter Olympics.  I must say I found it odd to be working in “development” and be in a country where I experienced 0 degrees Fahrenheit and being in a position to decide between going snowboarding or skiing. The first of the two pictures in fact shows me at the base of the ski resort outside Almaty, with a local beer in hand (which I subsequently consumed). The second photo is taken with one of the locals where she enjoyed locally brewed draft beer whereas I stuck to the classic Kazak vodka.

Yours truly

Country Club Founder and sometimes benevolent dictator

David Greeley

Ms Ridley is on the move!

Mr Secretary,

On behalf of Ms. Ridley I submit her evidence of countries 46 and 47 … Dubai, UAE and Namibia.
In the case of Namibia we have our 30th  anniversary dinner photo, complete with rose petal covered table and the visit to the amazing wine cellar at Castle Heinitzburg.
Dubai is a little more complex as this visit dates to January 2015 – Ms. Ridley is a bit shy on this one as she did leave the airport and spend the night in Dubai. However, having recently broken her arm she was so high on the very strong painkillers that she was not allowed or well-advised to add alcohol to the oxycodone … she however did provide the evidence of her visit to the top of the tallest building in the world …
Over to you Mr. Secretary for consideration of yourself and the esteemed membership
With kind regards,
Duncan
Stuck on 81 …

Sec'ys note -- Ms Ridley's visit is permitted -- the requirement of an alcoholic beverage is, as close readers of the By-Laws know, conditioned as 'where so permitted'.  Her ticket to the top of the building is on file in the Club archives.

Mr K takes a tandem

Honorable Secretary,

I have visited Ethiopia in February and I am now in Sweden. Ethiopia was for work and Sweden for vacation on our bicycle tandem. (So much slower than a motorcycle.)

Here are the photographs.

At this rate I will be 125 years old before I catch up with the leaders.

Mr v/d Z violates habit and principle

Mr Secretary,

I miserably failed to cross the border from Rwanda to the DRC, but at least I tried, so this will, against my habit and principle, remain a 1-country trip only -- number 118!

Mr C's Necessary Revisions Move Him to 3rd Place

Dear Mr. Secretary:

I write to inform you of necessary revisions to my countries visited total.   I happened upon the blog site today, and  I was shocked to see that my “Countries Visited” total remained stuck at 90.

Some of the revisions are in no doubt due to your laxness in maintaining accurate club records.  Others are due to travel taken since my last report.  Regardless.

In addition to the 90 countries listed, please record the following additions:

1)      Greece.   I just returned from Skiathos.  Spent a week with Mr. Buckman in his villa.  I think you know the gentleman.
2)      Tanzania:   I have been there a dozen times.   Several PSI retreats in Zanzibar.   Mr. Manchester (RIP) and I designed the Tanzania condom social marketing program in the mid -1990s.   May God grant you “Salama” despite your inaccuracy in record keeping.
3)      Angola:  I visited the PSI operation in 2015.  Better late than never was my motto.
4)      Qatar:  I spent the night there-clearing customs-- twice on my way to Nepal and back.  2015.  Lodging courtesy of Qatar Airways.
5)      Madagascar:   Finally a visit to the PSI operation in 2015.   My thanks to Pierre-Loup for his welcome.
6)      Mauritius:   Yet another country visited way back when (1988), and no doubt already reported.   I was living in Zambia at the time.
7)      Turkey:   A week spent in Istanbul, courtesy of PSI, in 2015.

So that puts me at 97.   Now that I am, shall we say, in between assignments, look for this number to soon break 100.

I appreciate your constant diligence in keeping my spreadsheet up to date.

With my most deep respect,

Mr Clancy
